Dovenby WI May 2009
The meeting was opened by President Diana Clark, who welcomed visitors from Dean WI, and then continued with a short business meeting.
Guest speaker John Holmes, a member of the dialect society was then introduced, following which he gave a talk on 'Cumbrian Dialect'. He spoke about the different dialects from the south to the north of the county. He read poems and stories with Workington, Maryport, Aspatria, Carlisle and Penrith dialects, and everyone agreed it was a very amusing and enjoyable evening. A vote of thanks was given by Diana Clark.
The competition - 'Cumbrian Sayings' in dialect was won by Anita Birkett, with runners up Martha Foster and Nancy Fearon.
The quiz was won by Martha Thompson with five of the visitors sharing second place.
The raffle was won by visitor Mrs Brough.
