Dovenby WI March 2012

The evening opened with Carole Colquitt reading the minutes of the last meeting, which were then accepted. It was put to members that the August trip will be to Floors Castle. Members agreed with this.

Four members were invited to the Lorton WI 90th birthday party, and all agreed that it was a great evening, with a lovely buffet followed by entertainment on the keyboard.

President Geraldine Baldwin then introduced guest speaker, archelogist Joanne Wilkinson from Grampus Heritage and Training, who gave a talk with slides about Papcastle and the archaeological investigations in 2010 and 2011.

Using geophysical surveying techniques eight trenches were dug in the area around Papcastle, and several items were found, including a bowl, a brooch and pottery from the second and third centuries. Pottery was also uncovered after the recent floods, and there is speculation that the Derwent was once navigable, and that Papcastle was once a harbour. Joanne's talk unlocked the hidden heritage of our area.

A vote of thanks was given by the president.

Dovenby WI is always glad to welcome new members or visitors. Meetings are normally held on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30pm at Bridekirk Dovenby School. More details and a programme are to be found on www.bridekirkparish.org.uk.
