Dovenby WI June 2011

Eighteen members and two guests met at the Thornby Moor Dairy at Crofton Hall, Thursby.

Mother and daughter Caroline and Leonie Fairbairn started the company in 1979 in a converted barn, and in 1994 expanded the dairy into its present premises at Crofton Hall.

Leonie took us through all the stages of cheese making from the delivery of the milk to the end product. The cheeses are all made by hand using milk from local farms.

As well as cows' milk they also use goats' and ewes' milk, making cheese five or six days a week.

Their cheese is available in delicatessens, specialised cheese shops and restaurants all over the country.

The evening ended with a cheese tasting, and with members buying cheese to take home.

Geraldine Baldwin gave a vote of thanks for a very interesting evening.

Members were reminded that there will be a trip to Threave Gardens in August.

Dovenby WI is always glad to welcome new members or visitors. Meetings are normally held on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30pm at Bridekirk Dovenby School.
