Dovenby WI July 2013
The meeting opened with Secretary Carole Colquitt reading the minutes of the June meeting, which were duly accepted. The President, Geraldine Baldwin read the County News Letter and discussed the possible closure of WI House and its implications for the future. Also the August trip to Levens Hall is not viable because of lack of numbers.
Guest speaker John Miles, who is appointed to the Calvert Trust, gave a very informative and personal account of the running of the centre at Little Crosthwaite near Keswick. Its aim is to enable people with disabilities, together with families and friends, to achieve their potential through the challenge of outdoor adventure in the Lake District National Park. The film about the centre helped us to see the positive results made by the caring and experienced instructors and volunteers.
The centre caters for people of all ages with sensory, learning and physical disabilities. Having fun, and making friends is achievable!
John's son Matthew is a fantastic example of a wheelchair user who has sailed, climbed, abseiled, driven a horse and trap and much more.
Matthew and his family help to raise lots of money to help the Calvert Trust, making the impossible possible.
The competition - a horse ornament was won by Martha Robinson, with Kath Palmer in second place.
The Quiz was won by Sheila Wilkinson.
The Raffle was won Hazel Graves.
