President Diana Clark opened the meeting by welcoming visitor Terry Shipley, an American lady at present living in Papcastle.
She then continued by giving her report on the recent conference held in Liverpool. The resolution in respect of mental health patients being held in prisons rather than hospitals was passed, but the debate against deep sea fishing was not passed.
With the business of the evening complete, guest speaker Pauline Bibby was introduced to give a talk on 'Materials for Life'. She spoke about the use of stainless steel, titanium and silicone in operations for hip replacements, tooth replacements, and silicone for breast reconstruction.
She also talked about the importance of keeping bones healthy by exercise and calcium, and in all gave a very interesting talk.
The competition - A tip for recycling was won by Sheila Wilkinson, with Mary Foster in second place.
The raffle was one by Mrs Bibby.
The quiz was won by Geraldine Baldwin.
For the June meeting, members enjoyed an evening visit to Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team headquarters.
