Dovenby WI April 2018

President Nita Eubank welcomed everyone to the meeting which included members from Dean, Embleton and Cockermouth W.I.s. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted as correct.

A short summary of the Annual Council meeting was given by Nita.

It was held on 7th April at Richard Rose Academy Carlisle.

A good meeting with excellent speakers Dolce Lewis "Powder and Paint" in the morning and Caroline Thompson Chair of Oxfam in the afternoon.

Carlisle U3A Uke Band rounded off the day and had everyone joining in.

Nita welcomed Mike Cowan our speaker for the evening 'London - Beijing on a Motorbike'.

In total 14 other motorcyclists along with guides and safety riders went on this fascinating journey. Mike gave a slide show which gave us some insight into the beauty and the poverty he saw on this three month journey as they travelled east along the Old Silk Road to Beijing. Everest Base Camp with 84 Hairpin Bends, The Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square all were experienced along with seeing the everyday hardships that people endure.

Mike encourage us all to go out and see more of the World.

Nita gave the vote of thanks for a truly entertaining and fascinating insight into the people and places he had seen.

The competition A Road Map Was won by Hilary Halliwell Dovenby WI, with Marjorie Sanderson from Dean WI winning for the visitors. Ann Lister won the Quiz. Raffle- Various prizes won by members and guests.

Next meeting May 10th will be at Helena Thompson Museum. Meetings are usually held at Bridekirk Dovenby School on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30pm.
