Dovenby WI April 2016

President Nita Eubank opened the meeting welcoming our new members.

Secretary Sheila Martin read the minutes and matters arising. Nita and Sheila attended the Spring Council meeting at Rheged, and gave members feedback on this.

Maurice Steele was the speaker for the evening. 'Walking Through History' was based on his experience of Hadrian's Wall. This was an excellent insight into his journey along the wall from Wallsend to Port Carlisle. Maurice had used his excellent photography skills to show us the history and stunning landscape of the walk. The trail runs for 84 miles beside the wall and is actually very new. The National Trust opened it just 13 years ago in 2003. There is plenty to see along the whole stretch of the wall, from Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum in the east to Carlisle Castle in the west, with Birdoswald and Vindolanda on the route.

Diana Clark gave Maurice a vote of thanks for his excellent presentation.

The competition, 'an old coin' was won by Hazel Graves and Jean Moralee.

The quiz was won by Linda Mumberson and friends.

The raffle was won by Jean Tytek.

Meetings are usually held at Bridekirk Dovenby School on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30pm. More details and a programme are to be found on http://www.bridekirkparish.org.uk/wi
