Dovenby WI April 2012

The meeting was opened by President Geraldine Baldwin. Secretary Carole Colquitt then read the minutes of the March meeting and these were duly accepted.

Correspondence was then read. This included an invitation to their 25th April meeting from Moresby Parks WI. After reading the County News, the President then introduced guest speaker Liz Bramwell, who gave a talk on botanical art. Liz is a botanical artist, and teaches this in Adult Education classes. Being self-taught, and subsequently attending two courses at Higham Hall, she then spent two years taking a diploma. Starting with freehand drawings, she makes a light and dark study, and for her actual painting using watercolour paints and pencils. Botanical paintings were first used to ensure that the correct plants were being used in medication. In times past, prosperous people used to have books made up by botanical artists containing plants and flowers.

A vote of thanks was given by the President.

The competition - A floral picture, was won by Martha Robinson, with Nancy Fearon as runner-up.

The quiz - was won by Jean Moralee.

The raffle was won by Joyce Thompson.

Dovenby WI is always glad to welcome new members or visitors. Meetings are normally held on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30pm at Bridekirk Dovenby School. More details and a programme are to be found on www.bridekirkparish.org.uk.
