Dovenby WI April 2009
President Diana Clark opened the meeting by introducing guest speaker Mrs Forrester who gave a talk with a demonstration about 'Butter Making'.
A farmer's wife, she has been making butter since being over the limit with their farm's milk quota. She makes 700 to 800 blocks each week, and this is widely sold from Scotland to London and Kent. They then attended the farmer's market at Harrison and Hetherington's, and this was also very successful.
Having to find a use for buttermilk, so the next step was to start baking scones and cakes as well as rum butter and lemon curd. As their success grew, they called themselves 'Cream of Cumbria' and now attend all the farmers markets.
Whilst demonstrating, Mrs Forrester kept us entertained with anecdotes and poems which she writes.
The evening then continued with a short business meeting, with Carol Colquit deputising as secretary, and President Diana Clark reporting on the spring council meeting.
The competition - 'A Butter Making Tool' was won by Nancy Fearon, with Anita Birkett in second place.
The raffle was won by Jean Moralee, with butter donated by Mrs Forrester.
The May meeting will be on Cumbrian Dialect by Mr John Holmes.
